Why Dance is One of the Best Activities for Kids in North Canton, OH

I know that parents are always looking for activities that will help their kids grow into confident, happy, and healthy young people and adults. Between sports, music lessons, and all of the after school activities, the options can feel endless and overwhelming. The thing is, we know that dance checks a lot of the boxes that you are looking for: physical fitness, creativity, discipline, and FUN!

At On Pointe Arts, we believe dance is so much more than movement. It’s a tool for building life skills that your child will carry well beyond the studio and well into adulthood. Here’s why dance we know that dance continues to be one of the best activities for kids in our community.

1. Dance Builds Confidence & Self-Esteem

When children step into a dance class, they’re stepping into a supportive environment where they are celebrated for their hard work as well as the goals that they achieve. Each new move they learn and perform boosts confidence. Dancers also gain the courage to express themselves, not just on stage, but in the classroom and in life. It is so hard to go on stage and perform a routine, but having the confidence to do that makes standing up to give a speech in high school or collage so much easier.

2. Dance Improves Physical Health & Coordination

Dance is a full-body workout disguised as fun and games in most classes. We work on balance and core strength, flexibility, and strength and stamina. Dancers develop their physical skills every time they come to dance. In an age when screen time is more enticing than active play, dance provides an easy way to keep kids moving and convince them to interact with their peers.

3. Dance Teaches Discipline & Focus

Working on choreography and dance routines tricks dancers brains into working on concentration, memory, and perseverance because they feel like they are just dancing around. These skills naturally spill over into their academics, helping students be better readers, test takers, and cooperative.

4. Dance Encourages Creativity & Self-Expression

Unlike many structured activities or sports, dance gives kids the freedom to express their unique personalities. Through movement and activities, children learn to communicate emotions, tell stories, and embrace their individuality. The freedom of expression is amazing for building resilience and emotional intelligence and regulation.

5. Dance Builds Friendships & Community

At On Pointe Arts, our studio is so much more than just dance classes, we are a community and a family. Our dancers form friendships with classmates and find role models in their teachers and assistants. We have an incredible network of “parents of dancer” who are welcoming, encouraging, and uplifting of their own artists and all the children around them. Many new friendships between parents are formed and build stronger in our lobby and at our door.

ADCC Studio of Excellence

Every year we strive to teach our dancers not only how to be fantastic performers and technicians, but also how to strive to be better humans. We constantly are reminding them that winning is never more important than remembering that the other competitors are people too. It is my hope that in receiving this award, our dancers and their families realize that being ethical and kind is its own kind of win. One that is just as worthy as being the best dancer to hit the stage.
