Dance is the PERFECT Winter Activity

As we have settled into the colder months in North Canton, it’s easy for the "winter slump" to take hold of us all. Between the chilly temperatures and the early sunsets, our usual outdoor adventures often get traded for cozy blankets and a bit too much screen time (for myself included).

At On Pointe Arts, we know that keeping kids active during the winter isn't just about burning off that extra "stuck inside" energy, it’s also about keeping their spirits high and their bodies growing, even when the ground is covered in snow and its too frigid to even go sledding and do our favorite winter activities.

If you’re looking for a way to keep your dancer moving this season, here is why dance is the ultimate winter activity for kids:

1. A Warm Place to Move

When it’s too cold for the playground, the studio is the perfect escape. Our classrooms are buzzing with energy, music, and movement, and we are definitely breaking a sweat in here. Whether they are leaping across the floor in ballet or hitting a high-energy combo in hip-hop, dance provides a safe, climate-controlled environment where kids can truly let loose and get their heart rates up without needing five layers of winter gear!

2. Beating the "Winter Blues"

We all feel it sometimes, the lack of sunshine can lead to a bit of a dip in mood. Physical activity is one of the best ways to release endorphins and help everyone's brains feel good. Seeing their friends, laughing through a new routine, and accomplishing a new skill gives our dancers a boost of confidence and joy that carries them through the greyest days of the winter.

3. Maintaining Strength and Coordination

Winter can often be a more sedentary season, especially for those of us who would rather hibernate than face the icy air, but dance keeps those muscles working! From improving flexibility and posture to building core strength and coordination, staying consistent with dance classes ensures that kids don't lose the physical progress they made in the fall in both dance and their other sports (I'm working on a breakdown of how dance specifically is a great cross training for all of our other sports in NE Ohio, so watch for that blog post soon!). It keeps them nimble, strong, and ready for whatever the next season brings.

4. The Power of Social Connection

Winter can sometimes feel a quite isolating, and weeks like this one where school is called off for 2-3 days can be especially isolating. Coming to the studio every week gives our dancers a sense of routine and a community to belong to outside of school. Chatting in the lobby, working together on a group piece, and cheering each other on creates a "home away from home" that is so important for their social and emotional well-being during the quieter months.

5. Goal-Oriented Fun

With spring performances and new milestones on the horizon, winter is the perfect time for deep learning. Having a goal to work toward, like mastering a specific turn, hitting a cool trick, or remembering a new performance routine, all give kids something to be excited and proud about every single week.

Keep the Magic Moving!

We love seeing our dancers walk through the doors, shaking off the cold and ready to dance. If you’ve noticed your child has a little extra energy to burn or could use a spark of creative fun this winter, there’s always a place for them in our community.

Let’s keep building dancers and building dreams, no matter what the thermometer says!

ADCC Studio of Excellence

Every year we strive to teach our dancers not only how to be fantastic performers and technicians, but also how to strive to be better humans. We constantly are reminding them that winning is never more important than remembering that the other competitors are people too. It is my hope that in receiving this award, our dancers and their families realize that being ethical and kind is its own kind of win. One that is just as worthy as being the best dancer to hit the stage.
