Why Dance Recitals Matter

When you look at a dance recital, you might think that all that matters is the fancy costumes, bright stage lights, and talented dancers. And while it absolutely is all of those things, recitals are also so much more important than most people and parents realize.

For dancers, recital season is a chance to show off all of their growth with their confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance. All while creating some of the best memories that they will carry with them for years!

A Goal to Work Toward

One of the most tangible parts of dance recital performance is that it gives dancers a reasonable and attainable goal. Throughout the year, students come to class each week to practice and learn new skills and choreography. The improvement from one week to the next may not feel like a whole lot for the majority of the year.

BUT, The recital is the celebration of all of that hard work. These dancers have committed to coming to class, even when the weather was nice and they would rather play outside, or a friend had a sleepover, or they were not feeling their best. They begin to understand that progress happens over time and that effort truly pays off in the end.

Building Confidence

There is something incredibly powerful about stepping onto a stage. And honestly, you reading this, would you be brave enough to go up on a stage and dance in front of 200+ people?

For a lot of dancers, recital day is the first time they step in front of a large audience. That moment can feel huge (if you, the parent build it up to be a big deal) and when they accomplish it, their confidence grows in ways that extend far beyond dance class. "I can do hard things!" is the best thing to have gained from this moment.

We often see dancers become more confident at school, more willing to try new things, and more comfortable expressing themselves after participating in performances year after year.

(Note: We are all about making as small a deal about things as possible! The recital is a big deal, but if you the parent go into the weekend with only kindness, pride, and joy, before your dancer has even gotten checked in and changed into their costume, then it just becomes any other day - no big deal - a cool experience that they get to enjoy but not be worried, stressed, or anxious about. This is how we talk about the performance at the studio, and when all of our dancers' adults are on the same page, it makes your child more apt to perform and smile on stage and actually enjoy their chosen activity and want to continue working on it!)

Learning Teamwork and Responsibility

Dance recitals also reinforce some life skills that we work on at class and that you, I am sure, are working on at home. Dancers learn how to work together as a group, support and cheer for their classmates, remember their responsibilities, and help to feel prepared for the event. They discover how their individual effort contributes to the success of the entire team or class.

They also learn perseverance. Mistakes happen. Nerves happen. But dancers learn how to keep going, adapt, and finish the routine strong, which is an incredibly important skill both on and off the stage.

Celebrating Growth

One of the most emotional parts of recital season is seeing how much dancers have grown.

Parents often remember when their child first walked into class feeling shy or uncertain. Then recital day arrives, and that same child is confidently walking onto a stage with a huge smile.

Those moments matter.

The recital is not about having perfect dance moves. It is about growth, courage, dedication, and joy.

Memories That Last Forever

Long after the costumes are packed away and the music fades, families tend to remember recital season forever.

From the toddler years of "putting on a show" on stage, to the excitement of nailing a trick in the performance, and all of the moments in between, the feeling of watching your child accomplish something they worked hard for is the best feeling in the world.

These moments become part of a dancer’s story, and we are so honored to be a part of it.

At On Pointe Arts, we thoughtfully plan and prepare for a performance designed to celebrate every dancer and the incredible journey they have taken throughout not only this season but their entire dance career. Because while the performance itself may only last a few minutes, the confidence and memories built along the way can last a lifetime.

ADCC Studio of Excellence

Every year we strive to teach our dancers not only how to be fantastic performers and technicians, but also how to strive to be better humans. We constantly are reminding them that winning is never more important than remembering that the other competitors are people too. It is my hope that in receiving this award, our dancers and their families realize that being ethical and kind is its own kind of win. One that is just as worthy as being the best dancer to hit the stage.
